Mother's Day special: Tamil Nadu's Idli Amma gets a home, thanks to Mahindra

Anand Gopal Mahindra is at it again. Known for his philanthropic pursuits, the Chairman of diversified Mahindra Group fulfilled his promise of gifting Tamil Nadu's Idli Amma a home of her own. For uninitiated, Kamalathal, now famous as Idli Amma, is from Vadivelampalayam, a village near Peru in Tamil Nadu. She has been serving idlis with sambhar and chutney for around 37 years for just Re 1.

Mahindra tweeted in April 2021 that Idli Amma would soon have her own house to serve people her famous home-cooked food, after her story went viral a couple of years ago. At that time, Mahindra tweeted that he would be happy to invest in her business!

On Mother's Day on Sunday, Mahindra shared a video showing Idli Amma getting into her new home. "Immense gratitude to our team for completing the construction of the house in time to gift it to Idli Amma on #MothersDay She's the embodiment of a Mother's virtues: nurturing, caring & selfless. A privilege to be able to support her & her work. Happy Mother's Day to you all!" he tweeted. After Mahindra's video on Mother's Day, netizens lauded his kind gesture.
